Welcome to Coolum Cricket Club

THE MAGNIFICENT 13

That’s it, they have done it! Our Mighty –13 have won the grand final! for 2011 - 2012 season

Playing on our home ground against Nambour, in front of a very parochial crowd, our unbeaten team, bowling first, got some quick early wickets and from then on never let down the pressure. A good line and length and energetic fielding forced Nambour into mistakes, as they ended up all out for 118 runs in 48 overs. An overall great bowling performance, with Josh Dredge “the Prodigy” 3/8 and “Lillee” Jarred Trahar 1/2 in 4.1 overs being the stand outs.

After a rain interruption and an early lunch, our opening batsmen, cpt Mat Winmill and Josh went in with fierce determination. We lost Josh early for 9, but then supercool Ty Wisken moved to the crease. He and Mat never looked in danger, and despite the slow run rate, which had the coaching staff very tense, they showed maturity beyond their years and annihilated the Nambour attack, taking us to victory. Mat Winmill had a real ‘captain knock’ and retired on 50 n/o to the cheers of the crowd, quickly followed by Ty on 27. Our team finished with 3/121 in 40 overs.

It was a fantastic win for our team and our club and the celebrations went on long after the game.
The most special moment of the game was watching a completely exhausted Mat Winmill Running 50 metres to hug and congratulate Ty Wisken, his batting partner, after his 27.
A lot of ‘old timers’ at the club are saying this is a team of a generation, full of very gifted players with the right attitude, and without a doubt, the best coach in the competition - Chris Aldridge.
Special thanks to assistant coach Craig Trahar, Kylie Wisken, Julie Aldridge and Pat Sweeney for their help on the big day.
On a personal note, I just like to say that it was a real privilege and a lot of fun to be this team’s manager.

Dom, a very, very proud manager.

A GRADE - COOLUM VS PALMWOODS AT RON MCMULLEN OVAL NO 3, MAROOCHYDORE  SAT 31ST MARCH
After the first 2 days play was washed out, Palmwoods eventually went into bat first and were bowled out for a total of 132 runs. The pick of the bowlers were Lethal Paceman Jessie "Stumpcracker" Cakurs jagging 4 wickets off 17.4 overs, well backed up by the Extreme Fast Bowler namely - Peter "AFB" Wilkinson taking 3 vital wickets off 14 overs and Andrew "Party at The Penthouse" Heffernator bagged the other wicket. There were 2 outstanding run outs starring Jessie when the ball hit his boot onto the wickets, with the woodsman batter stranded out of his crease and a marvellous outfield throw by The Heff achieving the 2nd run out. A special mention must also go to young Dom Winmill for his 2 superb catches. Well Coolum got off to a shaky start going into bat for the run chase and at one stage they were reeling at 4/5 until a brilliant 86 run partnership between top scorer Dustyn "Browndog" Brown with a sensational knock of 92 runs including a massive 6 and Jessie "Boom Boom" Cakurs being great support and remaining on 12 not out, saw Coolum past the post finishing at around 5/140 and winning the match. Also Not forgetting Skipper Extraordinaire" Shayne "Swinzey" England with a valuable contribution with the willow of 19 runs. Jessie Cakurs was declared Man of the Match.

B GRADE - COOLUM VS PALMWOODS AT JACK BEAUSANG OVAL NO 2, CALOUNDRA 25TH AND 31ST MARCH
Our team was a bit luckier only being washed out on the 1st Saturday and started play on Sunday at an earlier time of 9.30am with Skipper Rod "Rocket" Chambers winning the very important coin toss and electing to field first and it proved to be a very good toss to win as it was a wet spongy wicket with a few good spots for our artillery of fast bowlers to aim at. Coolum got off to a great start rolling the woodsmen for a dismal total of 93 runs. Best of Coolum's Bowlers were led by "Ooh Ahh" Craig Trahar who bowled an immaculate line and length taking the magnificent figures of 5/32 off 11.4 overs and was well backed up by Mike "Bend Em Like Balestra" with 2/17 off 13 overs, and also Colin "Apples" Appleby bowled superbly snaring 2/16 off 9 overs and also running out one of the woodsmen batsman. Classic Catches were taken by Blayney Shorter x 2, Jeff Morris x 1 and Timmy Hynes x 1. Coolum went on the run chase, but we got off to the worst possible start, at one stage in trouble and reeling at 4/17, largely thanks to the opening batsman and golden oldie - Gozza "McQuackers" Gosling getting out on a 1st baller, followed by a couple more quack quacks from Jeff and Bart. However Timmy Hynes resurrected our innings top scoring with a superb knock of 143 runs putting our side in the box seat with 1st innings honours at this stage. He timed the ball to perfection and it was one of the most stylish knocks I have ever seen on a wet deck punishing the bowling attack to all parts of the ground. He was well supported by "Ooh Ahh" Craig Trahar with a gutsy knock of 24 after retiring hurt and coming back on. Mike Balestra remained not out 13 and Rocket Chambers contributed with an even dozen in our final total of 223 runs. With a handy 130 run lead, Coolum started well having Palmwoods reeling at 4/41 at one stage and were eventually bowled out for 117 runs, giving Coolum B Grade Side Outright Victory! Wickets were shared by "Ooh Ahh" Craig Trahar capping off a great match with the ball jagging 2/10 off 7 overs in the 2nd innings, backed up by Apples with 2/22 off 14.1 overs (2-2-2), The ever consistent - Mick "Bend Em Like Balestra" capturing 2/21 off 12 overs, Spin Veteran Jeff Morris taking 2/11 off 6 overs and Tim Hynes finishing off the wicket tally with 1/7 off 2 overs and not forgetting a superb run out by Skipper Rod "Rocket" Chambers in the outfield. Also a special mention to Wickie - Chris "Bart" Bartley for a superb keeping effort behind the stumps. A simply marvellous effort by all the team players who all put in 110 percent and capping off the 10th premiership for the writer in 2 decades with Coolum Cricket Club.
All in all another double premiership for the club recorded!
