Broadband for Seniors internet kiosk

We are pleased to let you know that Coolum Community Centre now has a Broadband for Seniors internet kiosk. The kiosk features two computers with broadband access for use by older members of our local community. We are also providing training, so beginners are very welcome!
Broadband for Seniors is part of a $15m Australian Government initiative to increase the skills of older Australians using computers and the internet.
The new internet kiosk offers the opportunity for older people to discover how the web can play a great part in helping them to stay in touch with friends and family, along with offering access to the wealth of information available online. This is their chance to find out what all the excitement is about.

So if you, or someone you know, would be interested in learning more about computers and the internet for free, please pay us a visit; or contact us for more information on training and kiosk access times. More information on the Broadband for Seniors initiative can be found at http://www.necseniors.net.au

Family Support Program
It can be tough if you are new to the area, or have no one to call when you need some support.  FSP provides practical and / or emotional support to local families experiencing difficulties. FSP aims to help parents to feel more confident, help families connect with their community and help improve the bonds within a family.

FSP has a Co-coordinator and a team of trained volunteers.  The volunteers visit families and provide assistance such as:
  • a listening ear
  • information about services
  • help to join an activity
  • practical support during a time of change, eg, after a baby  is born, or a relationship  has ended
  • help to develop new skills and  confidence
  • encouragement to set and reach goals.
  • Volunteers usually visit once per week until goals have been reached or circumstances have changed.

Knowing someone cares can make a huge difference
This service is provided free, thanks to funding from the Department of Communities

The Family Support Program now has volunteers in the Coolum area and meetings for the volunteers are held monthly at the Coolum Community Centre. A training program for new volunteers will be held at the Coolum Community Centre later on this year, dates to be advised.

Mum's & Bub's Yoga
Increase your vitality, well-being and create new friendships. Mum's & Bub's Yoga held every Wednesday at the Coolum Community Centre from 9am-10am. $12/class. Through breath, movement and mind body connection, you are taken to that place of stillness within you. Feeling at peace, calm and centered will help you to take your Yoga practise home with you. As you take techniques that you learn in Yoga into your everyday lives, your awareness of your physical body and emotions allow you to be in control of your actions, rather than your actions be controller of you. Awareness increasing of your body and your everyday life, allows you to bring personal power back to yourself to create the life that you want. Lift your mood and allow your child to see you taking care of your needs. Whether your child is a young baby, crawling or perhaps they have just started walking Reality Awareness provides a space where you can practise your Yoga whilst keeping one eye on your child. Toys are available to keep your child occupied. Connect with other Mum’s to fulfil the desire to be part of a bigger community. As your children see you do what you love, it allows them to do the same. Check out the website for more details. Contact Hannah www.realityawareness.com

Playgroup/Mum's Meet
Playgroup is held every Wednesday from 10am-12pm. With a different activity each week for us and our children there is much learning through fun and connection to be had. Guest Speakers throughout the program share their passions and help us on our journey of discovery. Activities can include Tie Dying, Painting, Raw Chocolate Making and much more. Playgroup is by minimum gold coin donation and some activities are $5 per family. Check the website for a full list of events. Contact Hannah www.realityawareness.com

HISTORY

Established in 1990 to provide access for young people & their families through a
community service model which is based on the development of relationships within a local setting.

The Coolum Community Centre building is the old Coolum Picture Theatre that was kindly donated to our organisation. It has been lovingly restored by volunteer trades people & youth of Coolum. This is truly a successful example of what a local community can achieve!
